"I paint from feeling and truth." -- Michael Ireland
Michael Ireland started selling his work professionally in 1974. In the course of his long career, he sold hundreds of paintings to both private and corporate collectors and completed commissions from Europe to Hawaii. He had numerous solo and group shows in Nevada, California, Oregon, and Washington. By his late-twenties, Ireland had established a firm regional reputation for himself as a watercolorist in both Southwest and marine genres, with his work winning awards in such juried shows as the Las Vegas Art Museum's This Is Art, or the museum's annual Art Round-Up. His work also appeared in Southwest Art and earned him listings in Who's Who in Art in America for several years running.
Generous with his knowledge, Ireland also taught various independent workshops, as well as sessions through the Nevada Watercolor Society and the Las Vegas Art Museum. In the late 80s, he was a guest printmaking instructor at Pacific University, Forest Grove, Oregon, teaching both beginning and advanced printmaking. He served as exhibitions director for the Las Vegas Art Museum, Las Vegas Library, Nevada Watercolor Society (for which he also served as president), The Burk Gal'ry, Boulder City, Nevada, and the City of Las Vegas Gallery for the show "Las Vegas Impressions." He was serving on the board of directors for a local arts organization at the time of his death.
Ireland's career also included a variety of parallel activities such as designing a cancellation stamp for the U.S. Postal Service for Boulder City, Nevada, to commemorate the town's fiftieth anniversary in 1981. From 1996 to 2000 he produced renderings and did set design for entertainer Jimmy Buffett. The background he designed for Buffet's set for the 1997 show Havana Daydream was highlighted in an article on Jimmy Buffett's lighting designer in the article "Minimalism to Margaritaville," which appeared in November 1997 issue of Lighting Dimensions.
On September 21, 2000, Ireland died from injuries sustained in a fall.

"Some people are born printmakers, leaving a lasting impression in this short brush with life!"-- Michael Ireland, 2000
Ireland took up printmaking in 1980, using a small Dick Blick press. His prints reflect his background as a painter, and he worked to emphasize tone and value, rather than simply line quality. He used a variety of printmaking approaches, including intaglio (primarily aquatint, mezzotint and engraving), wood cut, lino cut, and monotype. The image determined which process he used, as each method has its own strengths and characteristics. He always did his own plate work and printing, eventually producing a catalog of over 25 images.
"I began my printmaking career more than 20 years ago because I was captivated by the unique quality of the final impression. The process is complex, but the end result is clean and precise. Every mark on the plate is reflected in the print; nothing is superfluous. I like the dual challenge of not only producing a good plate, but also being able to print it well enough to carry out the original intent of the image. Each print is hand-pulled by myself, so the process is more intimate than a commercial reproduction. This adds to the print's value, both to myself and the collector." -- Michael Ireland
